Offensive and Defensive EW

EW activities can be categorised as either offensive or defensive. In turn, the techniques used in offensive and defensive EW can be either passive or active. Offensive EW involves the processes of searching for, intercepting, locating (Direction Finding) and analysing transmissions as well as electronic jamming, deceiving and neutralising adversary electronic systems. It is important to understand offensive techniques, capabilities and limitations in order to effectively conduct defensive EW.

Electronic protection is an important subject and should be a consideration for all users of the EM spectrum as the requirement for effective EPM is as important in peace as in war. It is acknowledged, however that Emission Control (EMCON) and Communications Security (COMSEC) are often disregarded on operations in favour of expediency.
